PANEL DISCUSSION: CONTEMPORARY ART IN CHINA
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 7:00 PM, IN-FLUX SPACE, REGIS CENTER FOR ART
Moderator: Wang Chunchen, curator & professor, Central Academy of Fine Art
Li Shuan and Liu Xuguang, featured artists

Liu, Xuguang has been teaching at the Beijing Film Academy since 2004
where he is the course director for the New Media Lab in the Fine Art
Department. He is a 2004 graduate of Qinghua University where he
received a Ph.D. in Fine Art. In 1996 he taught at Tokyo University of
Art as a tutor at the Contemporary Art Studio. He also studied abroad in
Tokyo.

Li, Shuan graduated from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts where he
studied painting. He currently works for the Professor and Vice Dean of
the Department of Painting at the Beijing Film Academy. He also acts as
a member of the Chinese Fine Arts Association and is a member of the
Beijing Oil Painting Society.

Both artists have extensive and impressive exhibition records. They have
had exhibitions across Asia and have had some exposure in the West.

ENCOUNTERS: THE PAST RE-CONFIGURED is a part of the University of
Minnesota's continuing development of collaborative exchange with the
Beijing film Academy, and represents the interest both institutions have
in broadening international outreach and cooperation in the creation of
new educational opportunities for students. While in residence at the
University, the artists will discuss their work, its connections to the
history of Chinese art and aesthetic thought, and the ways in which they
have been influenced by the Western tradition in art. Many contemporary
Chinese artists are experiencing a newfound freedom of expression that
allows the treatment of cultural history as subject matter and critique.
These works function as a dialogue with a heretofore-closed historical
narrative and provide subject matter for discussions on the culturally
imbedded ideas of craftsmanship, narratives, and image content.
University of Minnesota Professor Joseph Allen from the Department of
Asian Languages and Literature will direct these discussions. Allen is a
scholar whose research focuses on the use of history in the present, the
images used to represent history, and the ways that visual arts are used
historically as a tool in the creation of a cultural and national narrative.

ENCOUNTERS: THE PAST RE-CONFIGURED is sponsored by the University of
Minnesota and the Beijing Film Academy as part of the ongoing program of
scholarly, artistic and teaching exchanges.

The faculties of both institutions have contributed time and resources
to the success of this project and are committed to building on the
strengths of our respective programs.

Sponsored by the Consortium for the Study of the Asias, CLA Dean's
Office, the Dept. of Asian Languages and Literatures.
