Red Pockets Scholarship

About the Red Pockets Scholarship
The Red Pockets Scholarship was created in 2004 as the result of generous donations to the China Center's annual fund drive in honor of its 25th anniversary. The scholarship provides opportunities for University of Minnesota students to incorporate educational or research experience in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau as part of their academic studies, internships, research, or professional training. The scholarship shall be used for the payment, partially or totally, of travel or tuition. Awards are between $250 and $1,500.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at the University of Minnesota
- Applicant must be in good academic standing, with a GAP of at least 3.00 (undergraduate student) or 3.5 (graduate student), with potential in their field
- Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident
Application Process
Complete the application packet including:
- Scholarship application form
- Faculty letter of recommendation (for graduate students, cannot be faculty adviser)
- Current official transcript
- Personal statement of purpose (undergraduate student) or research proposal (graduate student)
Note: this is separate from questions answered on application form. - Statement of support for research proposal from academic/faculty adviser (graduate student only)
Selection Criteria
- Applicants should have a well-defined objective involving their program in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Macau
- Strong record of academic achievement
- Strong motivation and potential for independent accomplishment in his/her chosen field
All applications are reviewed by a committee and scholarship recipients are notified of scholarship awards by mail approximately three weeks after the application deadline.
Application Deadlines:
December 11, 2009 for spring semester 2010
March 26, 2010 for May session & summer session 2010
July 30, 2009 for fall semester and winter break 2010, and
academic year 2010-11
